Who is Lip Colour Treatment For?

Lip colour treatment, also known as lip blush or lip tinting, is perfect for anyone who wants to enhance their natural lip colour, define their lip shape, or simplify their daily makeup routine. Whether you prefer a subtle "your lips but better" look or want to add more noticeable colour, this treatment can be fully customised to your preferences.

This treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals with naturally pale or uneven lip colour who want more definition, those who experience lipstick bleeding or feathering into fine lines, people with asymmetrical lips seeking better balance and proportion, busy professionals who want to look polished without daily lipstick application, anyone who has lost lip colour due to aging or medical conditions, and those who simply love the look of tinted lips but hate reapplying lipstick throughout the day.

Benefits of Lip Colour Treatment

Lip colour treatment offers transformative benefits that go beyond simple colour enhancement. The semi-permanent pigment creates a natural, youthful tint that enhances your features around the clock.

The Lip Colour Procedure

Your lip colour treatment is carefully designed to ensure comfort, safety, and beautiful results. Here's what to expect during your appointment at Art of Aesthetics:

1

Consultation & Colour Selection

We begin with a thorough consultation to discuss your desired look, assess your lip condition, and select the perfect colour. Dr Abi considers your skin undertones, natural lip colour, and lifestyle to recommend shades that will look beautiful both immediately and as they heal.

2

Numbing & Preparation

A medical-grade topical anaesthetic is applied to the lips to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. We allow 20-30 minutes for full numbing effect. Additional numbing is applied as needed during the treatment.

3

Lip Colour Application

Using precise techniques, Dr Abi deposits medical-grade pigment evenly across the lips, paying special attention to the lip border for definition. Multiple passes may be made to build up colour intensity according to your preference. The lip shape can be subtly enhanced during this process.

4

Aftercare Instructions

After the procedure, you'll receive detailed aftercare instructions and a healing balm. Your lips will appear more vibrant initially—this softens significantly as healing progresses. A touch-up appointment is scheduled for 6-8 weeks later.

Safety & Hygiene Standards

As a qualified dental surgeon (BDS), Dr Abi maintains the highest standards of hygiene and safety throughout every lip colour treatment. The delicate lip area requires expert care and medical-grade protocols.

Single-use, sterile needles and equipment
Lip-safe, medical-grade pigments
Thorough health screening before treatment
Cold sore history assessed and managed
Fully licensed and insured practice
Clinical environment with sterile protocols

Healing Timeline

Understanding the lip colour healing process helps you prepare for your treatment and know what to expect at each stage. Lip healing follows a predictable pattern.

Days 1-3: Initial Swelling

Your lips will appear significantly darker and more vibrant than the final result. Swelling is normal and peaks around day 2. Lips may feel tight and dry. Keep them moisturised with the provided healing balm.

Days 4-7: Peeling Phase

The colour will begin to flake and peel as the top layer of pigment sheds. This is completely normal—do not pick or peel! The colour may appear patchy or lighter during this phase.

Days 8-14: Colour Settling

Peeling completes and lips feel normal again. The colour may appear very light or almost gone—don't panic! This is the "ghosting" phase and is temporary.

Weeks 3-6: True Colour Emerges

The true colour gradually emerges as the skin fully heals and the pigment settles into the dermis. This is when you'll see your beautiful final results.

Week 6-8: Touch-Up Appointment

Your touch-up appointment perfects the results. We'll enhance colour intensity if desired, address any areas where pigment didn't take fully, and ensure even, beautiful coverage.

How Long Does Lip Colour Last?

Lip colour treatment typically lasts 2-5 years, making it one of the longest-lasting permanent makeup treatments. The longevity varies based on several factors including your lip care routine, sun exposure, lifestyle factors like smoking, and your individual metabolism.

To maximise the longevity of your lip colour results, we recommend using SPF lip balm daily to protect against sun-induced fading, avoiding harsh lip exfoliants and chemical peels near the lip area, staying hydrated to keep lips moisturised from within, and scheduling touch-ups every 2-3 years to maintain vibrancy.

The gradual fading of lip colour is actually a benefit—it allows you to adjust the shade or intensity as trends and preferences evolve. Many clients choose to go slightly bolder during touch-ups, while others prefer to maintain a more natural look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lips are more sensitive than other areas treated with permanent makeup, but topical numbing cream is applied before and throughout the procedure to ensure comfort. Most clients describe the sensation as tolerable—some mild discomfort but not painful. Additional numbing is applied as needed. Many clients find the second half of the treatment more comfortable as the numbing builds up.
Yes! We offer a wide range of colours from natural nude and soft pink tones to deeper berry, coral, and mauve shades. During your consultation, we'll help you select a colour that complements your skin tone, natural lip colour, and desired look. Custom mixing is available to create your perfect shade. We always recommend starting with a more natural shade—you can go bolder during your touch-up.
If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex virus), the lip colour procedure can potentially trigger an outbreak. We recommend taking antiviral medication (such as Valtrex) for 3 days before and 3 days after your treatment as a preventive measure. Please consult your doctor for a prescription. Let us know about your cold sore history during your consultation.
Absolutely! Once your lips are fully healed (after about 4 weeks), you can wear any lip products you like. Your lip colour treatment serves as a beautiful base—you can wear lipstick or gloss over it for special occasions, or simply enjoy your enhanced natural colour daily without any makeup at all.
The initial appointment takes approximately 2-3 hours. This includes consultation, colour selection, numbing time (20-30 minutes), and the lip colour application itself. Touch-up appointments are shorter, typically lasting 1.5-2 hours. We never rush—your comfort and results are our priority.
Lip colour treatment may not be suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cold sores or other lip infections, are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, have bleeding disorders or take blood thinners, have diabetes (requires doctor's clearance), or have lip fillers less than 4 weeks old. We conduct thorough health screening during consultation.
